I have learned many things along quite an amazing journey these last 90 days… the learning process has been an "eye-opener" to what a true goal really means. Many times in my life I thought goals were just merely doing things you may never have done before and doing them well. But a goal is not just doing something well, it is the art of achieving the very prize at the end.
But what happens when you achieve your goal…well, it is no longer a goal at all…it becomes an ACCOMPLISHMENT! If we continue to look at our accomplishments we can sometimes have a tendency to digress. True, we must always have the accomplishment as a reminder of what got us there and what it took to achieve it. However, if all I did was sit and stare at my trophy case all day, then I would not be doing what it would take to continue adding to that trophy case. As great as accomplishments are, unless we set new goals, then what was once something we accomplished may just become a goal all over again. We must not allow ourselves to not grow and build on the foundation of the already accomplished goal. Meaning…an obtained goal is no longer a goal at all…it is now reality. We can let our reality become a thing of the past if we don’t carry the torch forward to the next "leg of the race". Much like an Olympian bearing the torch, if that Olympian carried the torch their portion of the journey across the World, then yes, they accomplished more than most ever would. But if they stood with that torch merely admiring what they had accomplished after they completed their leg, others would have had their goals "snuffed"… they would not have the opportunity to accomplish their own goals. One person’s accomplishment can become another person’s goals. You see, we set goals and follow them. Once we master those goals we take on a leadership role in the journey it took to get there and it allows for others to view us as hope and determination for goals they may set. Their is an art to it all…that art is "giving back". It’s like building your own house…your neighbor likes the house you built and wants one for himself…naturally you can’t just give him yours as you worked, put the time and effort in to build it, and accomplished your own goal…but, what you can do is let him borrow the tools that you used to build your own house and the "blueprints" it took to make it just as beautiful. Many times until we accomplish what we were destined to do, it may hold others back from accomplishing what is possible in them as well. People need leaders…they need mentors and people that can believe in them just like we may have needed. It is much like the business we are in…a team or down line you might say. We are only as strong as our weakest link. That is why we must take our accomplishments and help others turn their goals into accomplishments as well.
My wife and I are now accomplished P90X Grads, and even though we reached the finish line, we must now set new goals for ourselves that we may never have set had we not accomplished the previous. Accomplishments are linked to your goals…but it is not your goal. Move on to the next higher road to see what else life has in store. I wrote a small poem in high school when I was younger that I kind of twisted around to my own words…I leave you with this:
YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE WORLD
You can’t change the world…but you can change your mind
And when you change your mind…you can change your point of view
And when you change your point of view…you can change your goals
And when you change your goals…you can change the opinions of others
And when you change the opinions of others…you can change the facts
And when you change a fact…you can change a vote
And when you change a vote…YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!!!
Yours in Goals and Accomplishments,
Tim
